All the Barbz and Ken dollz who were relishing the hip pop of Nicki Minaj's "Super Bass," have a seat. Roman is back in the building.
On the heels of the recent announcement that the Young Money femcee would be dropping her sophomore album on Valentine's Day, Minja is ready to whet appetites with this blitzkrieg of insults, debauchery and tom foolery. The good news for those who may be underwhelmed is that Nicki calls this the "wackest song on Roman Reloaded".
After chewing on Nicki's new offering, here are a few strengths and weaknesses.
Strengths
- It's got energy. Nicki Minaj is known for her colored wigs, but she's also pretty remarkable for her energy. The voices, the accents, the yelling, it's all here. For the Barbz, this song is like their "Ante Up." It'll get them riled up.
- It's reminiscent of mixtape Nicki. With all the cocky, shit stirring this song goes for, it seems like a more polished cousin of Nicki's "Itty Bitty Piggy." Shittin' on your cornflakes and everything.
- It doesn't have any features. Her other major diss track, "Roman's Revenge," was a trunk-rattling affair. But Nicki had to share billing with Eminem's alter ego Slim Shady. The superstar feature was jaw-dropping, but still, it's nice to hear Nicki doing bad all by herself.
Weaknesses
- It's no "Monster." Fairly or not, when it comes to crazy, earth-shattering, spastic verses, Nicki is always going to be measured against her head-turning performance on Kanye's "Monster." And this doesn't even come close. The lyrics are tepid in comparison and not stringed together nearly as effectively. Also, at this point, many of the tricks Nicki is bringing (like dragging words ouuuuuuuuuuttttttt) are old hat.
- There's no real beef behind it. When "Roman's Revenge" came out, tongues were wagging because everyone knew that Nicki was lobbing grenades at Lil' Kim. But Nicki's been dragging Lil' Kim in nearly every verse since then. She even put the chick on blast on a Britney Spears record. At this point, making fun of Kim for having a stalled career is like making fun of Michael Jackson for being white. Time to find a new horse to beat.
