While Rihanna and Chris are both trying to move past the incident that transformed their former teen dream of a relationship into a nightmare, Rihanna acknowledged in an interview with CNN International that she'll probably be asked about the incident for years to come.
In the interview, which was released late last month, she also spoke about her strained relationship with her father, the story of signing with Jay-Z, working with Justin Timberlake and the makings of "Rated R." Though many speculated that "Rated R" was strongly influenced by the high-profile relationship and subsequent domestic violence with Chris, Rihanna pointed to a specific song from the album as the summation of her feelings on the whole thing: "Cold Case Love"
RIHANNA: "Cold Case Love" is a song about my past relationship--
INTERVIEWER: With Chris Brown?
RIHANNA: Yes. It's a song that everybody wanted to hear. That's exactly what everybody wanted to hear. Everything I didn't say for the past 8 months. Exactly how I felt about that relationship and how I feel about it now, that says it all.
Watch the video of Rihanna's CNN International interview with Talk Asia below. The part about "Cold Case Love" starts around 14:00 minutes in.
The lyrics to "Cold Case Love" are some of the strongest on the album, in terms of both language and imagery. In the song, she compares her relationship to that of an unsolved homicide:
What you did to me was a crime
Cold case love
And I let you reach me one last time
But that's enoughYour love was breaking the law
But I needed a witness
So pick me up when it's over
It don't make any differenceWill it ever be solved?
Or am I taking the fall?
Truth was there all along
Tell me, how did we miss it?
Kudos to Rihanna for continuing to maintain a positive, yet realistic attitude about the whole thing. She clearly doesn't relish rehashing the event over and over again, but she smartly recognizes that throwing a fit about it in the media won't make it go away either.
